Send the Cards

I have never met a soul who didn't enjoy opening the mailbox to find they have mail. And not just any mail - mail addressed casually to them, likely from a friend or family member, and sometimes in a colorful envelope!

Now let me ask you this - how often are you the sender? Oof. If you're anything like me, you are probably not nearly as good at this as you would like. But it's kind of silly, isn't it? If we know how happy cards make us, why don't we send more out?

I can think of a few reasons:

  1. busy-ness

  2. laziness

  3. exhaustion

  4. depression

  5. carelessness

  6. ?????

I hope I'm not the only one who has like, a billion excuses.....

I am laid up after an extremely complex reconstructive joint surgery at the moment. My mom came over the other day, and looked around and said, "You haven't gotten any cards?" And I hadn't. We decided maybe it's a dying trend.

Well today, my husband brought in the mail and said, "Whoa, you have a lot of cards!"

I was a little confused at first, but when I opened a card from my Aunt and Uncle, a folded up piece of paper fell out. It was from my Uncle Wayne. And it said...

"YOUR MOM THOUGHT YOU MIGHT LIKE A FEW EXTRA GREETINGS THIS YEAR. I THOUGHT YOU MIGHT APPRECIATE A NOTE INSTEAD OF A SIGNED CARD......"

And I instantly burst into tears. Reading that sentence - that my mom thought I needed to have some cards to cheer me up, and how she took action - absolutely melted my heart and made me so grateful to be a part of such an incredible family who genuinely cares for and loves one another.

So guys, the moral of the story is to send more cards. That's it. Write notes, send cards, even send little gifts if you'd like. But really, all people need is a meaningful piece of mail to show up in a bright envelope to find a reason to smile. And let me tell you - my momma knew I needed it. And I will most definitely be sending more cards!
